It happens in a split second — the phone slips out of your pocket on Davie Street and lands face-down on the sidewalk. Before you panic, take a breath. A cracked screen is one of the most common phone problems there is, and a few quick steps now can save you a lot of trouble later.
The short version
- Protect your fingers — cover sharp cracks with clear tape or a screen protector.
- Back up your phone today while the screen still works.
- Watch for spreading damage — lines, black spots or dead touch mean the display itself is hurt.
- Don’t wait too long — cracks let in dust and moisture and tend to get worse.
1. Make it safe to handle
Broken glass can have tiny, razor-sharp edges. If the crack is rough to the touch, place a piece of clear packing tape or an inexpensive screen protector over it. This keeps glass splinters off your fingers and face, and helps stop loose pieces from falling out.
If glass is actively flaking off, stop swiping on it altogether and use voice controls or a connected keyboard until it’s repaired.
2. Back up your data right away
A cracked screen can go from “annoying” to “completely unresponsive” without warning. If your phone still works, back it up now:
- iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now, or connect to a computer and back up with Finder or iTunes.
- Android: Settings → Google → Backup (the exact menu varies by brand), and make sure Google Photos backup is on.

3. Is it just the glass, or the display too?
Look closely at the screen with the phone on:
- Glass damage only: the picture looks normal under the cracks and touch works everywhere.
- Display damage: black or purple blotches, coloured lines, flickering, a green tint or areas that don’t respond to touch.
On most modern phones the glass and the display are fused into one assembly, so even a “glass only” crack is usually fixed by replacing the whole screen. Either way, knowing what you’re seeing helps when you ask for a quote.
4. Things to avoid
- Pressing on the crack to see if it still works — pressure can spread the damage into the display.
- Heat and moisture — a cracked phone has lost part of its seal, so keep it away from the bathroom, the beach and the rain where possible.
- Superglue or nail polish “fixes” — they can seep under the glass and make a proper repair harder.
5. When to get it repaired
Book a repair sooner rather than later if the cracks are spreading, the touch screen is misbehaving, you see lines or dark spots, or the glass is sharp. Small cracks rarely stay small.
When you get a quote, have your exact model ready (Settings → About) and ask about part options and timing. On recent iPhones, Settings may show a notice about the display part after a screen replacement — it’s worth asking your repair shop what to expect.
